5 Coolest pedal powered buses to promote sustainable transport

The earth is crying. It wants us to understand how we are depleting it of what it holds in her womb. It nurtures us, but we fail to understand its concern. In addition to that, we have almost deprived the earth of some of its natural resources; there are other awaiting depletion. It is not that we do not know what harm pollution brings to the environment, and us but we take no steps to curb it. Well, some steps have been taken.

7 most amazing inventions for a globally warmed world

While restricting emission remains the best possible way to stop global warming, researchers all over the world are trying to invent more efficient ways to save our planet from a devastating end which is not far away if the global carbon dioxide emission continued rising with the same pace. Awareness for the environment has certainly led to many inventions, energy saving technologies and consumption of alternate sources of energy. Given below are 7 most amazing inventions for globally warmed world.

Amazing inventions

Global warming has not only increased the temperature globally but has also taken coastal areas under its territory by flooding them in water. Flooding problems and concurrent housing shortage have led to the development of unique floating houses. First such houses were created by the firm Dura Vermeer and were installed on the coasts of Maasbommel city in 2007. They consist of hollow cubes which provide them upthrust and enable them to float in water. These houses can resist up to five meter rise in sea level.
2. Artificial glaciers

Agriculture of developing countries like India is fully dependent on rains and rivers. The rivers of India, Peru, Chile etc and many more countries are glaciers fed and melting of glaciers is posing a big problem for agriculturists of these countries. To solve this problem a concept of creating an artificial glacier has been given by Chewang Norphel, a retired civil engineer in the Ladakh region of north India. These artificial glaciers are very resourceful and provide water in summers. The glacier is created by collecting water into a shallow pool blocked with rocky embankments. Water in the pool freezes with the fall in temperature and forms a sheet of ice. When summers approach this water melts and is used to sow the crops. The largest artificial glacier till date is one kilometer long and 45 meter wide.

It’s not only difficult for human beings to survive in scorching heat but it is impossible for crops too to stay alive in such conditions. Researchers are using selective breeding methods to adapt crops with the changing climatic conditions. Behavior and characteristics of the drought-tolerant species is studied carefully and their features are added to the crops by genetic engineering. Researchers are already experimenting with oilseed rape and maize, and their drought-tolerant samples are ready with 40 percent better yield than conventional variety. Similarly tests are being carried out on wheat in Egypt which is claimed to use one-eighth of the water used by conventional wheat crop.
4. Rotating power-generating skyscrapers

A unique building has been designed by Italian-Israeli architect David Fisher in Dubai, where each floor can rotate about its central axis independent of other floors of the building. The shape of this building constantly changes with the rotation of its floors. This eco-friendly building is fitted with wind turbines between each floor which generates huge amount of energy that could power 10 similar sized buildings. After designing green building for Dubai, Fisher is designing similar towers for London, New York and Moscow.
5. Vertical farms

Producing crops closer to the consumers and using efficient techniques will cut down on wasted water and other resources used for farming. Dickson Despommier at Columbia University in New York City stated that 80 percent of the land available for farming is already being used and to feed more people by 2050 we will have to produce crops in farms in Skyscrapers. Solar powered lighting system will be used to grow the crops, and there will be provisions to recycle water and waste by natural means. Crops will be safe from flood as well as drought and required amount of irrigation could be provided.
6. Solar-powered air conditioning

High temperature rise in Australia has made summers extremely hot and unbearable. Similarly there is a huge demand for air conditioning equipments in California. Mike Dennis, an engineer at the Australian National University has found out an eco-friendly air conditioning concept that works on solar energy. The design is very efficient and gives the maximum cooling effect when the Sun is at its peak. It also provides hot water which could be used for other household purposes. Air compressed with thermal energy sprays refrigerant out of a jet, and heat is lost in this process as the refrigerant evaporates.
7. Floating sustainable cities

We have already discussed floating houses, on the similar rationale concept for laying floating city has been created. Cities like Sydney, New York and London which have to invest huge amount on flood defenses are looking forward to create such sustainable floating cities. This innovative and ingenious concept has been given by Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut and is believed to be a long term solution to rising sea-levels.These cities could accommodate as many as 50,000 refugees and could generate power using various renewable sources including wind, wave and solar heat.

5 most fuel efficient airlines in the world

Like road traffic, the air traffic is also increasing swiftly with each passing day. The emissions from aircraft have already polluted the air above and if things persist like this, it could reach hazardous levels in future. The need is to look for the ways to use clean technology to power the aircraft and substitute smoke generating engines with fuel efficient engines. Fuel economy is already a huge concern for airlines and now it could be a competitive issue as well.

Fuel efficient Airlines
1. American Airlines

In 2010, new Boeing 737 planes have been added to the American Airlines which are 35% more fuel- efficient when compared to the planes used earlier. American Airline has adopted various sustainable measures in past few years and successfully saves 123 million gallons of jet fuel every year. Airline’s producing company AMR has reduced greenhouse gas emission by 5% in 2010 when compared to 2009. AMR has installed 'winglets' on its 767-300 planes which help in improving aerodynamic efficiency. Efforts have also been made to reduce weight of eatables and potable water carried on the planes. American Airlines have replaced its lighting system with efficient fluorescent technology and LEDs. In 2010, American Airlines recycled around 7.2 million pounds of e-waste.
2Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic is ready to launch its fuel efficient plane which is expected to use 15% less fuel per seat. The A330 plane has been named as ‘Beauty Queen’ and it uses long range twin engine making it most proficient of its kind. The new engines used will reduce carbon emission as well. Virgin’s initial two A330 will have 59 premium economy seats and 255 economy seats and remaining A330-300 will have upper Class, premium economy and economy. Entertainment has also been kept in mind as Panasonic In Flight Entertainment system will be fitted with latest touch technology allowing passengers to scroll the system for 300 hours. The plane will provide internet facility and passengers will be able to receive emails and messages on their Blackberrys and other mobile handsets.
Southwest Airlines is planning to save 1.4 billion gallons of fuel and reduce carbon emission by 14 million tons by 2018, by implementing new landing procedures and other measures. Federal Aviation Administration is planning to update air traffic control to reduce flight delays and costs. Southwest Airlines have undertaken an initiative named as Required Navigation Performance (RNP) and according to it, all the pilots are supposed to follow landing patterns designed using global positioning systems. This initiative is expected to save $16 million annually and will be implemented at all Southwest airports by modifying flight display software. Implementation of this new procedure will start from airports of Birmingham, Boise, Chicago Midway, Los Angeles, Oakland and Oklahoma City.
4. Delta Airline
Delta Airline is planning to buy a new fuel efficient 737-900ER aircraft from Boeing to replace its older aircraft. The new aircraft will cost around $8.5 billion and will substitute Boeing 757, 767s and A320s. The new aircraft will be fitted with Boeing Sky Interiors that will make aircraft look more spacious and also enhance the comfort with better architectural and lighting system in the cabin. They will not only provide an ambient atmosphere to the passengers but will also be more fuel efficient and reliable.
5. Continental Airlines

Recognizing the need to reduce greenhouse gases emission, Continental Airlines is planning to incorporate various measures to minimize its carbon footprint. By acquiring 300 fuel-efficient planes and its equipments, Continental Airline has achieved 38% reduction in greenhouse gas emission and fuel consumption. Continental Airline has become the most fuel-efficient major in U.S. They have replaced the aircraft engines with twin-engine which consumes less fuel and releases less carbon dioxide. Installing advanced technology Aero Blades, winglets, using sustainable bio-fuels, recycling programs and reducing aircraft weight are some of the measures that have made Continental one of the best and eco-friendly airlines of the world.
